In today’s event, women from the families of these prisoners have been placed in the center for the first time.
In Ezkaba, this Sunday, tribute was paid to the prisoners who entrenched themselves in the fortress of San Cristóbal between 1934 and 1945 during the civil war, in memory of their escape, which will be completed tomorrow 85 years. Nearly 800 prisoners fled and another 200 were shot.
In today’s event, for the first time, the women belong to the families of these 795 republican prisoners who, though often forgotten, have taken on a great burden.
In conversation with EITB Media, Koldo Plaa member of Txinparta Collective Memory, has pointed out that these women had to make long journeys “to visit the prisoners and support the whole family”, for which they had to “organise”.
In this case, however, they wanted to make special mention of it who stayed at homewhich also suffered from “various repressions, both physical and economic”.
The governments of Navarre and Spain agreed a few months ago to set up a working group turn the fortress of San Cristóbal into a place of memory.
