Private jets are the most climate-damaging and socially unfair form of mobility. Environmental protection organizations draw attention to this time and time again. Now politicians are taking action. Austria, together with the Netherlands and France, is launching an EU-level initiative to curb the private aviation of the super-rich.
Strict rules may apply for short journeys
In a joint letter to the EU Commission, which has an exclusive use of the “Krone”, the three countries are calling for stricter rules on private jet flights “so that a fair contribution is made to the climate damage caused”. Concrete measures are not mentioned in the letter, including requirements for a ban on short-haul flights or higher taxes are discussed in the debate.
Two-thirds of private jet flights are shorter than 750 kilometers. “Private jet flights are a hobby of the super rich. But we can’t afford it all. Because every flight with a private jet is particularly harmful to our climate. We need stricter rules here,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, who explained the initiative in an interview with Krone.
EU strives for climate-neutral air traffic
The EU wants to make aviation climate neutral by 2050. In the letter, the three countries make it clear that private jets must make an important contribution to this. In addition, Austria has put the subject on the agenda of the next meeting of transport ministers on 1 June.
