Following the recently released explosive video by the candidate for the SPÖ presidency, Andreas Babler, in which he described the EU as “worse than NATO”, a shower of head-shaking and incomprehension came from Brussels.
The first vice-president of the EU parliament, Othmar Karas (ÖVP), is “annoyed” by Babler’s heartfelt statements. According to Karas, Babler “is a Marxist one day, the next he uses the words of the FPÖ”.
Vilimsky: “EU too left”
Liberal MEP Harald Vilimsky is critical of Babler’s statement that the reason for his criticism is that right-wing populism is growing in the Union. “On the contrary: this European Union is very much left-wing. You deal with LGBTIQ and very, very left-wing issues.” He wants to move the EU further to the right.
Gamon shocked by ‘unfathomable ideas’
NEOS MEP Claudia Gamon is “shocked” by Babler’s statements. He was “just completely blank from a foreign policy point of view”. And further: “That frightens me”, because Babler “wanted to become chairman of the SPÖ with this dark idea”, according to Gamon.
