It was a narrow victory for Hans Peter Doskozil, 53 percent of the deputies voted for him and made him the new federal party chairman of the SPÖ. There are a few construction sites waiting for the 52-year-old, who is currently the acting governor of Burgenland. The “Krone” spoke with Doskozil immediately after the vote.
“crown”:Mr. Doskozil, you were touched but showed no euphoria when you won the showdown. what were your feelings
Hans Peter Doskozil: I’m not conditioned to jump in the air. It would also have been disrespectful to Andreas Babler if I had jumped in the air. I also felt that the need for agreement between Members was very great.
You immediately announced that you wanted to take a risk. That means no coalition, neither with the FPÖ nor with the ÖVP. You need to get well above 30 percent for this to work
That’s the risk.
But a very high risk. In the end, the SPÖ could end up back on the opposition bench…
I am not a politician who wants to stay in office until he is 65. You can’t always just count and tactics in life. I think voters appreciate it when I say what I want to achieve.
A two-party coalition is difficult. With three parties, as you can see in Germany now, it doesn’t get any easier. Why do you prefer this model?
If voters had known how the grand coalition was lived, they would have rejected it. It was brutal how people lived. Why are mirror controls necessary for control? An SPÖ ministry always has an ÖVP ministry to manage and vice versa. You have to experience coalitions differently. It needs a foundation of trust.
Her first major hurdle is reconciliation with the mayor of Vienna. In terms of content, you are far apart when it comes to living and creating real estate. But also at minimum wage. How should this work?
There are three areas in which we differ substantively. I have different views on creating property, but my model is just an offer to the citizen. I want to make real estate affordable, but I don’t force it on anyone. I also want the term non-profit to be redefined. It is unacceptable for banks to own non-profit properties. A few things need to be corrected here. I think the differences are not so great that we cannot find common ground.
Actually, it was your dream to become Rapid president, but now you think SPÖ boss was your lifelong dream.
You can have two life dreams.
Will you make Julia Herr, who was a supporter of Babler, head of the Parliamentary Club?
I want to talk to Andi Babler. On Tuesday we will take our time to make personnel decisions.
