“Mass demonstration” of solidarity with youth Zelaia and Barbados in Amurrio

Date:

The ANkerkeria Stop platform has denounced that the Supreme Court’s final decision before the appeal of Aitor Zelaia and Galder Barbado from Álava is “anachronistic and inhumane”.

The Supreme Court (TS) has confirmed the sentence imposed by the National Court 4 years in prison to the young people of Alava Aitor Zelaia and Galder Barbadoa conviction “anachronistic” and “inhuman”denounced this Sunday about a thousand people concentrated in the Zabale de Amurrio school (Álava).

At a press conference, members of the platform ANkerkeria Stop have reminded that the verdict is against young people firm, as they will not file any other appeal. However, they stress that the process, “as we have done from day one”, has been an “anachronistic” and “inhumane” one. They say it is incomprehensible that we must face such an attack today. “Euskal Herria is moving forward despite the fact that they want us to cling to the past, violating civil and political rights and having to fight this kind of injustice,” they complain.

“Out of love and togetherness”, the people gathered today have assured they will not leave Zelaia and Barbado alone, “because we love our friends, colleagues and political activists”. They say they love their devotion to the people and add that, as they have done thousands of times, “we have seen a wave of solidarity“.

The Ertzaintza stopped February 2019 Aitor Zelaia and Galder Barbado, who, as they have denounced, have become the protagonists of a “macabre police and judicial road” that has lasted more than four years. “They thus became protagonists of this new injustice,” they complained.

The trial against them took place in January 2021 at the Spanish National Court in Madrid. That’s what the young people were sentenced to 4 years in prison, one year of probation and 10 years disqualification. In view of this, they appealed and after two years of waiting, the Supreme Court upheld the original verdict.

Currently Zelaia and Barbado waiting for the sentence to be executed and, as they explained at today’s press conference, in the coming days or weeks, the National Court will activate the so-called prison entry requirement, which may involve a sudden arrest. “In the coming days or weeks, Aitor and Galder, with or without detention, will be taken to prison,” they announced.

That is why the solidarity platform ANkerkeria Stop has called on citizens to be aware of the following calls while spreading the solidarity gestures that can be performed at the local level.
