The big interview – will you do it with your left hand, Mr. Babler?

Date:

After a supermeltdown of the Election Commission and three (!) counts, Andreas Babler (50) was declared SPÖ leader. 19 hours after the announcement, he talks to Conny Bischofberger about an extinguished fire, charisma and cannabis, rumors of a secret file and his way to chancellor.

Wednesday mornings are very busy in the colonnaded hall of Parliament. A man in a mid-blue suit and a leather briefcase under his arm rushes down the aisles: it is Federal Councilor Andreas Babler. When a group of visitors recognizes the new SPÖ boss, 40 people start clapping. Before that, Babeler was already in the “Morgenjournal” and in Löwelstraße, “it is quite turbulent at the moment”.

When he smiles, the lines between his eyebrows move back and forth. Before he has to vote, the mayor of Traiskirchen takes plenty of time for the “Krone” interview in the “refectory” with its light upholstered furniture and marble tables. Since the renovation and refurbishment of the Parliament, the small hall has served as a “quiet room”. The new-new SPÖ has not yet moved to the offices of the parliamentary club, it is only 19 hours old at the moment.

“crown”: Mr. Babeler, do you have each other on Tuesday evening after the ZIP 2 Martin Thür actually thank you? You have him to thank for the fact that the mess was discovered during the count and that you and not Hans Peter Doskozil are the head of the SPÖ.
Andrew Babylon: I greeted him with “Hello, Mr. Excel!” – Laughs and quickly tries to look serious again.
