The headscarf ban in kindergartens was one of the flagship projects of the former turquoise-blue coalition. However, as this is unconstitutional, it will be repealed again. Minister for Integration Susanne Raab (ÖVP) was nevertheless disappointed.
“Incompatible with the federal constitution” is the verdict of the constitutional service in the Federal Chancellery, which finally puts an end to the discussion about whether or not to wear a headscarf for children of preschool age.
“I think it’s fundamentally wrong”
Raab wants to accept that: “We live in a constitutional state and we all have to adhere to it”, she said in the Ö1 “Morgenjournal” on Friday. Still, she expressed her dissatisfaction with the decision: “I think that’s a shame – I don’t want three-year-old girls to wear a headscarf, I think that’s fundamentally wrong,” said the minister.
In any case, the new agreement on the financing of extra childcare no longer contains a headscarf ban. When the ban was introduced, the government did not provide specific figures on how many children actually wear headscarves in kindergarten – but these children were known to exist, which was the reason for the move at the time.
More money for more care
In principle, Raab now wants to improve childcare. With the help of more budget, not only should more facilities be made available nationwide, but opening hours should also be improved. This is necessary to make it possible to combine family and career, says Raab.
