Four Austrian MPs have visited the Ukrainian cities of Odessa and Mykolaiv in recent days. On Tuesday they reported in parliament about “a war in which Ukraine is being destroyed”. The population there is exposed to “permanent missile terror”, the Russian army specifically attacks “civilian life”.
“This trip especially impressed all of us because we saw destruction that you just can’t imagine,” said NEOS MP Helmut Brandstätter. He had traveled to Ukraine with his colleagues Wolfgang Gerstl (ÖVP), Harald Troch (SPÖ) and Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic (Greens). One must say goodbye to the idea that this is a war in which territories must be conquered. “This is a war in which Ukraine must be destroyed,” Brandstätter said.
Despite the war, the population looks ahead and has an “incomprehensible will to survive”. “What fascinated me is the attitude of Ukraine,” said Gerstl. The terror would target both innocent children and farmers. Even buildings that were not strategically important would be destroyed.
Ernst-Dziedzic: “Environmental War”
Ernst-Dziedzic spoke of Russian ecocide related to the blowing up of the Kachowka dam. “We are dealing with warfare that depends on environmental warfare,” said the Green MEP. Environmental crimes should be enshrined in national law. In general, Russian warfare is based on expulsion, destruction and crime. It is also trying to destabilize the Republic of Moldova and the Baltic states.
This trip was already the third visit of the Austria/Belarus/Moldova/Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group. No one from the FPÖ delegation took part this time, which led to criticism from the other parliamentary parties.
