German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wants to set up her own OSCE climate fund. She made this known on Friday before the climate conference in Vienna. Two million euros could be made available for this purpose.
The conference will be attended by senior representatives of OSCE member states, including US Special Envoy John Kerry and Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP). Schallenberg did not decide before the conference whether he would support such a climate fund. Baerbock emphasized that the possibility of such a fund should be discussed first. It’s not about making a decision yet.
Ukraine’s environment minister Ruslan Strilets announced that he would like to talk about 2,500 cases of “ecocide” at the conference. This means the destruction of nature by war. Russia must be held accountable for this, Strilets said. However, no representative from this country is expected. The Kremlin spoke of a “dubious meeting” and of politicized and provocative issues on the agenda.
Schallenberg: “Ignoring international law”
For Schallenberg, Russia does not comply with the international rights of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, ed.). However, the organization is important for security and cooperation in Europe and the environmental dimension should receive more attention in the future. Ahead of the conference, John Kerry stated that the international community “must act much faster” than was most recently agreed at the climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.
