Fear of explosives – IAEA was not allowed on the roof of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Date:

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is now demanding access to all parts of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Their inspectors had requested access to the roofs of the nuclear power plant, on which Russia allegedly placed explosives, according to Ukraine. The IAEA reports that no license has been obtained so far.

However, the visits to, among other things, the cooling basins have now been completed, IAEA boss Rafael Grossi said during a visit to Tokyo on Friday. “For now, no evidence of explosives or mines has been found,” he explained.

According to Grossi, IAEA staff have not yet been able to inspect the roofs of the facility, which is occupied by Russian soldiers. But he is confident that approval will be obtained, he said.

Take care of explosives placed on the roof
In recent days, the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has caused great international concern. After repeated warnings from Russia and Ukraine about alleged attack plans from the other side, the IAEA on Wednesday called for extensive access to the plant to check for mines or explosives on the power plant’s grounds.

The Ukrainian military had accused the Russian occupiers of placing “explosive-like objects” on the roofs of two reactors (highlighted in yellow in the tweet above). Their blast should “create the impression of shelling from the Ukrainian side,” it said. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned of a “subversive act by the Kiev regime”. The risk of sabotage by Ukraine “is high,” he said.

IAEA crew permanently stationed at the nuclear power plant
Warnings of a possible loss of control and nuclear catastrophe have been around for some time. Given the global attention, Moscow has been allowing IAEA inspections since last year. Since then, their experts have been staying there to monitor the situation in the nuclear facility.
