Distribution Problem – “Don’t have the doctors where we need them!”

Date:

A shortage of doctors and a shortage of nurses is a major problem in Austria. But it shouldn’t be, because Austria has the most doctors in all of Europe. More study places or fewer foreign students are not necessary. “If we already have doctors, we have to use them in such a way that health comes out afterwards.” Labor and infrastructure would be misused.

Politicians have been warning for some time about a shortage of doctors and a further deterioration of the health system. Various political solutions are now circulating. The Vienna City Councilor for Public Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) advocates an increase in the number of study places, while the governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), recently argued for a change in the admission rules. That is why only people who are allowed to study the subject in their home country are allowed to participate. This means that numerus fixus refugees are denied a place at the university.

But according to that Vice President of the Medical Association, Dr. Stephen Conrad, there is no shortage of doctors, but a distribution problem. “We don’t have the doctors where we need them!”. Because even if the number of study places is increased, this measure will take effect in 12 years at the latest. The problems are here now and cannot be effectively solved by more medical students, said the vice president of the medical association.
