The ORF is currently dealing with quite a vortex. Apparently, the broadcaster fell for Russian propaganda – and sent it on “ZiB 1”.
Corruption in the Ukraine was discussed in “ZiB 1” on Tuesday. According to ORF correspondent Christian Wehrschütz, circumventing the mobilization is a source of corruption. Two videos below were meant to underline “that not all men are ready to fight for their country”.
After the broadcast, many users on platform X (formerly Twitter) vented their anger. They criticized that the shootings had nothing in common with forced recruitment. Instead, they showed the arrest of an agent of the Russian secret service FSB in the Ukrainian city of Odessa and a rejection at the border. Andre Wolf of the fact-checking platform Mimikama confirmed these allegations: “Unfortunately, the ORF was completely preoccupied with Russian propaganda.”
Initially, the broadcaster did not want to admit the error, until finally the Ukrainian ambassador to Austria, Vasyl Khymynets, got involved. “Reporting with videos in the wrong context is without a doubt MANIPULATION,” said the diplomat on Platform X.
On Thursday, the ORF finally admitted its mistake. “Further investigation by the ORF and a further check have shown that the said videos from Ukraine do not correspond to the content conveyed in the ‘Zeit im Bild’ of August 15, which the ORF deeply regrets,” said von Küniglberg.
