After these final meetings, he will be able to nominate a presidential candidate if he believes someone can perform the inauguration.
King Felipe VI conclude the round of talks today prior to the inauguration of the next president of the Spanish government with the leaders of the parties elected to be part of the Congress of Deputies in the general elections. Today it is the turn of the three parties that won the most seats on July 23: the chairman of vox, Santiago Abascal (10:30); the general secretary of PSOEPedro Sánchez (12:00) and close the round with the President of the PPAlberto Núñez Feijóo (4 p.m.).
Yesterday, Monday, the head of state met with representatives of UPN, the Canary Islands Coalition, PNV and Sumar. Yolanda Díaz defended Sánchez’s candidacy for the monarch, stating that there is a “real” possibility of retaining the majority seen in the makeup of the congressional table. She was sure that the PSOE leader “after not easy negotiations” will receive the necessary support.
On behalf of the PNV, Aitor Esteban informed him that he would not support Feijóo, because the PNV “will not be in a combination where Vox is needed”. For its part, UPN informed him that his deputy would vote for the popular candidate at the inauguration. Javier Esparza assures that he prefers elections to a government “with Bildu”.
Finally, CC’s representative, Cristina Valido, reaffirmed her support for Feijóo, but at the same time was also ready to support Sánchez if he committed to a 55-point “Canarian agenda”.
ERC, EH Bildu, Junts and BNG have refused to meet the monarch.
After listening to the representatives during the contacts held over these two days, the Head of State will be able to propose a presidential candidate, if it is clear to him who can carry out the inauguration. Both Feijoó and Sánchez have expressed their willingness to submit to the inauguration, but for now neither has reached the necessary agreements to achieve a sufficient majority.
If the monarch decides not to appoint anyone, he can issue a new round after a few days.
