An American media report on apparently increased espionage activities in Greenland lets the Danish government give the alarm bells. She is now calling for a detail from Washington.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Thursday that he would invite the sitting American ambassador to Denmark. “I read the article in the” Wall Street Journal “and he is very worried because we don’t spy on friends,” said Rasmussen for reporters during a meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw.
“We will invite the sitting American ambassador for an interview to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to see if this somewhat disturbing information is confirmed.” US President Donald Trump repeatedly said that he wanted to take over Greenland a half-autonomous Danish area in the Arctic. He also does not exclude violent annexation.
The importance of Greenland for the US
Trump had already said in 2019 that he wanted to buy Greenland. Since his second training in January 2025, he emphasized several times that he wanted to bring the Arctic Island area under American control. Greenland is the largest island on earth. From a geographical point of view, it is located on the North -American continent and extends to the North Pole area.
The island is of great importance for the world climate and for the military control of the North Pole area, it is also rich in raw materials such as rare earths. Important shipping routes also run in the region. The United States maintains an air force base with an early warning system for ballistic rockets. The governments of Greenland and Denmark fiercely reject Trump’s request.
