Already in childhood – almost every fifth woman has experienced sexual violence

Date:

Almost every fifth wife and around every seventh man in the world have become a sacrifice of sexual violence. This stems from a worldwide study published in the “The Lancet” Journal. Affected and survivors have a considerably increased risk of developing different diseases.

According to this, the proportion of women who experienced sexual violence before the age of 18 was almost 19 percent in an average of almost 15 percent in men. The figures have remained largely unchanged since 1990.

In the number of non -reported cases probably much higher
The study also refers to a particularly high number of non -reported cases in poorer countries, due to the lack of data or weak survey instruments. But even in richer countries there could be a large number of non -reported cases, for example due to memory heels, shame or trauma -related memory loss. All data has certain uncertainty intervals, so it can also be higher or lower in a certain scope.

The countries with the highest part of women were the Solomons by almost 43 percent and the ivory coast with 32 percent, Chile, Costa Rica and India are around 31 percent.

“Sexual violence against children is a widespread problem of human rights and health and the world clearly succeeds in not ending her,” said the senior author Emmanuela Gakidou, professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (Ihme) at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The figures are “deeply disturbing and we urgently need measures from all countries to improve the laws, guidelines and the response of experts.”

Those affected with a higher risk for many diseases
Co-author Luisa Flor, university teacher at Ihme, emphasized: “The survival of sexual violence against children has a higher risk of depression, anxiety, drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and even asthma.” Sexual violence against children can also influence their social development, their educational success and their economic success.

The researchers used data from 460 sources, including international databases such as the Global Health Data Exchange and the WHO database against women. Only population -representative studies from 1980 to 2023 were taken into account. In order to compensate differences between the data records, the team has adjusted different definitions of sexual violence and estimated the prevalence in 204 countries with the help of a statistical modeling process.

Unwanted sexual contacts (also touches, not only sexual sexual intercourse) were considered to be sexual violence according to the international standards of the United Nations before the age of 18. Online abuse or exploitation was not counted, because information about it is usually recorded separately.
