Lessons have barely started again when the students take to the streets again to demonstrate for better climate protection measures. So if you plan to go to the inner cities of Graz or Vienna on September 15, you should think about it… The climate demonstrators also receive support from teachers.
The stumbling block was a broadcast from Christian Stocker, General Secretary of the ÖVP. He described the activists, literally also ‘Krone’ columnist Lea Schilling, as ‘climate extremists’ who would ‘hold society hostage’.
Teachers declare ‘full solidarity with activists’
The Fridays for Future movement had previously announced climate strikes for September 15. They also receive solidarity from the teachers for this. The ‘Teachers for Future’ wrote on Twitter: ‘If a government party with such a broadcast responds to a simple demonstration with signs held up by Lena Schilling and Co, we must also respond – full solidarity with all peaceful demonstrators, with all climate activists. !”
Moreover, even the education departments in Vorarlberg and Vienna have declared climate strikes school-related events, the teachers tweeted: “We say: climate protests are deeply democratic!”
Climate stickers also start the new semester
In addition to the school strikes, the ‘last generation’ climate stickers also announced actions just in time for the start of the school year. It would start on Monday morning at Vienna’s Schwarzenbergplatz and Graz’s Kaiser-Josef-Platz. Again, they are unlikely to make themselves popular with motorists. Especially on the first day of school, many people’s nerves are already on edge.
There will also be actions in other places, but they are still classified, it was said: we will start our nationwide protest wave next Monday because the federal government has clearly not used the summer holidays productively,” the group tweeted.
Karner for harsher sentences
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) recently said in an APA interview that “radical climate activists” would be among the groups increasingly targeted by authorities. Karner mentions that there have already been 500 arrests and 2,300 reports related to the glue campaigns this year. The police are strategically well positioned here. But apparently the current level of punishment is not deterrent enough. From the point of view of the police, tightening up in individual areas therefore makes sense.
