A few days ago, Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini (Lega) threatened to go to the European Court of Justice in the transit dispute between Austria and Italy. Both Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) and Tyrolean Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) showed little concern.
Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler was hardly impressed, but criticized her Italian colleague. Salvini saw the government breaking the rules in the dispute over transit rules. He could not accept this and wanted to respond accordingly. He called on the European Commission to take action, otherwise “we will do it in accordance with Article 259”. According to the article, any EU member state can appeal to the European Court of Justice if it believes there has been a breach of contract.
Gewessler was “very calm” after the threat, she confirmed to the APA. At the same time she criticized Salvini. The health and living conditions of the people of Tyrol are “less valuable to them than the profits of the Italian freight lobby.”
Tyrolean LH Anton Mattle also told the APA that threats of legal action in Tyrol have now disappeared. The protection of health, the environment and infrastructure would outweigh fossil transport policies in Italy. “Salvini should also focus more on reducing traffic in the interests of the people along the Brenner corridor, instead of demanding more and more truck trips. In any case, Tyrol will justify, defend and explain its anti-transit measures to every institution in the world.”
