According to their representatives, Bosniaks should be recognized as an ethnic group in Austria. A corresponding initiative will be addressed to Parliament in early October. The project has broad political support.
The representatives are politically supported by, among others, former Federal President Heinz Fischer, former ÖVP politician Heinrich Neisser and the Green Secretary General Olga Voglauer, according to the ORF program “Heimat, Fremde Heimat”.
Right to protection of language and culture
Ethnic group status is related to the right to protection of language and culture. The constitution protects native ethnic groups and includes Austrian citizens of their own ethnicity who have long lived and called Austria home.
The Society of Bosnian Academics in Austria is one of the organizations seeking to achieve recognition.
