The farce surrounding the search for a successor to the only abortion doctor in all of Vorarlberg is now also causing a stir in Vienna.
It is a sensitive issue that urgently needs a solution, but the search for a follow-up solution to the issue of abortion is becoming a farce. The issue, in which the state government seems almost a little helpless, is now making waves in Vienna. “The state government of Vorarlberg allows itself to be pressured by right-wing conservative and Christian organizations and thus prevents safe options for women who want to have an abortion. This puts women’s lives at risk,” said Eva-Maria Holzleitner, women’s president of the federal SPÖ.
It is incomprehensible that (in Vorarlberg, please note) abortions are not offered as in other hospitals. “It’s a slap in the face for us women, when it is still mainly men who want to decide about women’s bodies,” explains Stefanie Matei, SPÖ women’s leader from Vorarlberg.
It is unfortunate that almost fifty years after the introduction of the term regulation, reactionary men in particular are starting to doubt safe abortion options again. “We call on the ÖVP to implement the current resolution of the state parliament on the abortion clinic,” they demand in unison.
No alternative so far
As reported, the only doctor who performs abortions in the region will retire at the end of the year. The country always assured that it was working on a follow-up solution. Finally, State Councilor Rüscher announced that a corresponding private practice would be set up in the Bregenz hospital. Following protests, this plan has now been canceled – so far no alternative has been presented.
