After the wave of criticism about the redistribution of property by several Viennese SPÖ politicians in an allotment garden association in the Danube city, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler is going on the attack. On Sunday he promised quick clarification and consequences.
“All facts must be presented as quickly as possible,” Babler said in a press release together with club chairman Philip Kucher. At the same time, they called for a repurposing levy as a general solution.
“Cannot remain without consequences”
“If it turns out that there is something to the accusations of personal enrichment through insider information or influencing procedures, this should not go without consequences,” said the red federal grandees.
A swipe at the boss of the community association
In addition, the problem of redistribution of profits needs to be solved as it affects many communities in Austria. Babler referred to the accusations against Alfred Riedl (ÖVP), leader of the community association.
“When land is converted into building land, owners benefit from huge increases in value through public decisions – without any personal contribution,” Kucher criticized. The SPÖ demands that these profits can be skimmed off with a redistribution tax. The money could be invested in affordable housing and land purchases by states and municipalities.
