Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has again criticized Austria’s position on his country’s accession to Schengen. The Social Democrat said he would not accept Romania being “humiliated” by Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s (ÖVP) opposition to joining Schengen.
Ciolacu was responding to CNN Antena 3’s question whether he could confirm that Romania blocked Austria’s participation in NATO meetings. “What Chancellor Nehammer is doing is unacceptable,” Ciolacu said, noting that the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament “have made a recommendation” that Romania “complies with all technical requirements.” Ciolacu addressed Nehammer and said: “You have the right to veto, but you must also justify it.”
Revenge via NATO, threat from the ECJ
If Austria uses its veto again in December, it will appeal to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and ask the Council, Commission and Parliament for support, the Romanian prime minister said.
On Saturday it was announced that Romania is blocking Austria’s participation in NATO meetings. Two military officers in Brussels have been waiting for weeks for their accreditation with the military alliance. The Foreign Ministry in Vienna said Romania had requested more time for its decision to voluntarily send two armed forces officers to NATO headquarters.
