Even two days after Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s (ÖVP) much-criticized video was leaked, the outrage has not stopped. The citizens of Vienna are now joining the discussion in front of krone.tv – and hardly have a good word to say about it.
Criticism across the domestic political spectrum, malice on social media: the domestic political debate is currently completely overshadowed by the Chancellor’s explosive statements on child poverty and part-time work for women. As the street investigation now shows, there is hardly any understanding for Nehammer’s position.
“Normally he would have to resign after making such a statement.”
“You see that this is a politician who has no idea of reality,” is how a passerby summed up the speakers – she thinks “an apology would be appropriate.” “We have so much poverty in Austria, they have to do something about it,” another adds downright angrily.
“Normally, I think, he should resign after such a statement.” If he had to live on 1,500 or 2,000 euros a month, he would probably think differently, says another pedestrian in front of the camera.

Kogler puts it into perspective: the FPÖ wants new elections
On Friday, Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) also commented on the published video material. “These statements were obviously far removed from the reality of these women’s lives,” Kogler told journalists in Vienna. Nevertheless, he emphasized the government’s work in the fight against poverty.
Naturally, the FPÖ was not satisfied with this, the video shows Nehammer’s “deepest hatred for his own people”, according to Secretary General Michael Schnedlitz, who therefore considers new elections essential.
