The video that emerged of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) has now also led to sharp criticism within the ranks of the green coalition partner. A Tyrolean MP now made people sit up and pay attention.
Nehammer’s statements “cannot be surpassed in cynicism”; the chancellor spoke “with contempt and a lack of reality” about families at risk of falling into poverty, Barbara Neßler, member of the Tyrolean National Council, said at a meeting of the Green district in Innsbruck.
“Children come to school hungry”
“We know that children come to school hungry,” her party’s children, youth and family spokesperson told the federal party chairman of the ÖVP, among others.
Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler reacted more cautiously on Friday, describing Nehammer’s statements as “careless statements, some say slogans” and saying: “These statements were of course far removed from the reality of these women’s lives.”
