The debate over a leaked video in which the chancellor critically discussed child poverty and part-time work in the presence of party officials (see video above) is becoming increasingly bizarre. Now FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl has taken aim at the ÖVP leader and even compared him to a camel at the Hartberg Oktoberfest.
The citizen video continues to stir heated emotions in Austria. Even within the ranks of the small coalition partner, Nehammer’s statements caused surprise. This “cannot be surpassed in terms of cynicism” and the chancellor spoke “full of contempt and unrealism” about families at risk of falling into poverty, Barbara Neßler, member of the Tyrolean National Council, said on Saturday at a meeting of the Green district in Innsbruck.
On Sunday, Kickl worked on the Chancellor. Over a morning pint in Hartberg, Styria, the Blue frontman cited the recent performances and video as his proof of why he believes a “systemic change in the Austrian political landscape” is urgently needed.
“Austria needs a People’s Chancellor who is there for the people and not Chancellor Nehammer, who probably believes that the English translation of Chancellor is Burger King,” was one of the statements. At the same time, Kickl emphasized: “We listen to the concerns and needs, because that is exactly what is needed in our country, but what has become a dying virtue in politics. “I do this at real events and I do it on real squares, on real streets, in real festival tents, at real meetings, with real people and with a real beer – nothing is watered down with us,” says Kickl.
Nehammer and the “watered down” beer
Speaking of ‘watered down’, the Freedom Party also didn’t miss the opportunity to make fun of the beer Nehammer drank a few weeks ago at Ex in the Altausseer Kirtag. The beer that is “expressed” there is said to have been diluted with water. “If the brilliant achievement of the Chancellor is drinking a glass of water with beer foam on ex, any camel can also be Chancellor,” Kickl teased, drawing applause from his supporters.
