She has been a member of the Bad Gleichenberg municipal council since 1990, was deputy mayor from 2000 to 2004 and was elected local mayor on September 16, 2004. However, in a few weeks this political era will come to an end. As of October 31, four days after her 62nd birthday, Christine Siegel will resign from all political positions. Her successor will be the current deputy mayor Michael Karl.
Christine Siegel was able to celebrate four successes en suite at the last municipal elections; Since 2020, the ÖVP has governed the community of 5,300 inhabitants with an absolute majority (13 VP, 8 SP, 3 FP, 1 Green). “This job was and is a calling that has always brought me great joy. But after 33 years in politics and 19 years at the top, it is time to make room. In the future, I want to be able to spend more time with my family and especially with my four-year-old grandson Conrad,” says Siegel. “However, it will certainly be a period of unrest. I certainly want and will continue to do volunteer work in the social field in Bad Gleichenberg.”
Mayoral elections in the first week of November
Siegel’s current deputy engineer Michael Karl (48), who will probably only lead the company on an interim basis, will probably be elected as the new mayor in the first week of November. He is looking forward to the new task: “It is of course a great challenge, especially if you succeed someone who has held this position for so long and so successfully. But what could be better for a resident of Bad Gleichenberg than to be responsible for leading his home community into a good future?”
