In Germany the traffic light coalition is in decline. In Austria, a three-party coalition could become a reality in 2024. Former government coordinator Thomas Drozda describes the obstacles.
Given the fragmentation of the party system, the three-party coalition in Germany was seen as the model of the future. SPÖ leader Andreas Babler also dreams of forming the so-called traffic light coalition with NEOS and the Greens after the 2024 National Council elections, to relegate the ÖVP to the opposition bench after more than thirty years. The ÖVP, SPÖ with the Greens or NEOS variants are preferred by the red state leaders.
Since the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse, one thing is clear: all three parties, the SPD, the Greens and the FDP, have declined radically.
