After a close look at the country’s honey pots, Lower Austria’s EU mandate, Alexander Bernhuber, declares war on consumer deception surrounding bee sweets: he discovers adulteration in the jars, as well as fraudulent labels and calls for countermeasures .
The laboratory of the Joint Research Center (JRC) carries out food analyzes on behalf of the European Commission. The frightening result: of the 320 honey samples taken, almost half (46 percent) were “suspected of non-compliance with the EU honey directives”, that is, of adulteration.
Reinhard Hetzenauer is chairman of Bee Austria, the umbrella organization of commercial and recreational beekeepers, and is annoyed when fake honey is found next to local quality products on supermarket shelves. “Such counterfeits are illegal. But if you only pay attention to the price and not to the origin, you will soon end up with counterfeit items in your shopping bag,” he says – and he is not alone in his criticism.
