Pro-Hamas protests in Europe following the terrorist attack in Israel spark outrage and anger. The call for stricter laws is also growing louder in this country. The focus of the debate: the Federal Trojan and stricter penalties against banned symbols.
The newly ignited conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is taking place not only in the Middle East, but also in Europe. In many Western European cities, pro-Palestinian demonstrations, in which Hamas terror is openly welcomed, are causing a lack of understanding.
In this country, the ÖVP in particular is exerting pressure to attach legal consequences to this escalation. On the one hand, she wants to double the fines for the use of prohibited symbols in the Symbols Act from 4,000 to 8,000 euros. According to informed circles, adjustments will also be made to the prohibition law and the badge law.
Is the Federal Trojan coming now?
The symbols of the terrorist organization Hamas are banned in Austria, as are those of Islamic State. The second goal pursued by the police, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the ÖVP is to monitor opportunities for news channels such as Telegram. In 2019, a surveillance package planned by the ÖVP and FPÖ was annulled by the Constitutional Court.
Domestic authorities rely on information from abroad. For example from Germany, where these instruments have been approved.
