For ten days – Austria: New controls at the border with the Czech Republic

Date:

Austria is setting up stationary controls at the border with the Czech Republic, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday afternoon. The measure will initially apply from Wednesday for ten days. Germany previously announced that it would introduce further border controls.

The move is a response to Germany’s recently introduced controls at the Czech border and is intended to prevent smugglers from escaping, the report said.

Berlin announced new controls
On Monday, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser informed the European Commission of stationary checks at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland for an initial period of ten days.

Faeser assured that “the controls must be carried out selectively and proportionately in order to disrupt the daily lives of commuters, trade and travel as little as possible”.
