It is probably the most long-awaited trial on the domestic political scene: from 9:30 am, ex-chancellor and ex-ÖVP leader Sebastian Kurz will have to appear in court. In an initial statement to media representatives, he emphasized that he was optimistic and would plead “not guilty.” The “Krone” is on site and reporting live from the Grand Jury Courtroom in the Vienna Regional Court.
Kurz is the first ex-chancellor in more than thirty years to be in the dock. The last time former SPÖ Chancellor Fred Sinowatz was on trial was in 1992 for false witness statements. A test of strength that does not occur every day in the “Gray House”, even though many spectacular cases have already been heard in the historic courtroom.

Short statement only on Fridays
However, the former chancellor’s statement is not expected until Friday, especially because he is listed as the second defendant after Bettina Glatz-Kremsner and the judge usually takes his turn. In any case, the media interest is great; all courtroom seats were reserved weeks in advance.
