“Last day like this” – Green “Urviech” withdraws from the National Council

Date:

He describes himself as a green ‘native animal’ and has long been one of the Greens’ political co-creators. Michel Reimon is now withdrawing from federal politics – he said on Monday that he would no longer run for the Austrian parliament. Yet he would like to remain in politics – but in a different, leading position.

“The invitations to apply went out this weekend. “I’ll fill it in,” the Green Member of the National Council announces via Facebook the direction his political future should take – putting himself in play as a possible top candidate for his party in the upcoming European elections.

“We need to position ourselves more broadly”
He started his statement by saying that he had actually “decided for a long time” that he did not want to return to the National Council after the current legislature and that he actually envisioned “a certain period completely without politics”. There are certainly two central issues in the next EU elections, security and inflation, that must be “tackled together” – this is primarily the job of the Greens. He summarizes why he considers the other parties less credible in these areas.

“As an EU parliamentarian I have worked on these issues and that is why I am so moved by them.” But calling for “climate happiness” alone is “not enough” for him personally. We need to position ourselves more broadly,” he urges more involvement in the Greens’ core problem. The Green Federal Congress is expected to decide in December whether Reimon will actually lead the Greens.

SPÖ is fighting for a list for the EU elections
The other parties are also slowly getting into position. Former ‘Kurier’ editor-in-chief Helmut Brandstätter is apparently in the starting blocks for NEOS. On Monday it was announced that the political newcomer is now an official party member. Whether he will succeed Claudia Gamon, who has moved to Vorarlberg, will probably only be decided in January.

During the EU elections, a well-known conflict over list places broke out within the SPÖ. But it is already clear who will lead the SPÖ in the EU elections next summer. Just like in 2019, when the Social Democrats achieved the worst result in the federal elections, Andreas Schieder will be at the top. Behind him follows the Vice-President of the EU Parliament, Evelyn Regner.
