A day before the national holiday, when the Hofburg traditionally opens and the Federal President presents his official residence to all interested parties, Alexander Van der Bellen himself is invited to a special session in the National Council. The sender of the invitation is FPÖ President Herbert Kickl, who wants to give the head of state a “holistic view of the issues of neutrality and sovereignty that are so important for Austria” and their threats.
From the FPÖ leader’s point of view, Austria’s neutrality and sovereignty are “in immediate danger” due to the government’s policies, but also “as a result of the inaction of the head of state.” In recent years, Van der Bellen has often admired and praised the beauty and elegance of the federal constitution. “But you always remained silent when the principles of the Constitution, which also include the eternal neutrality and sovereignty of our country, were questioned,” Kickl wrote in an open letter.
The government’s ‘sin register’.
Turquoise Green’s record of sins related to violations of neutrality and sovereignty is long: these include the EU’s Ukraine policy, the planned abolition of the unanimity principle in the EU, the EU’s ‘debt union’ the EU and the weakening of the right to cash payments.
In view of these multiple threats to Austrian sovereignty and neutrality, there is a need for better protection of these values through the Austrian Federal Constitution – “for example through a national sovereignty law that takes precedence over EU laws”. The FPÖ parliamentary club will insist on this during the special session on Wednesday and hold the government to account. “The box in the meeting room of the National Council is reserved for you,” Kickl emphasizes.
