On Monday evening, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will participate in a meeting with several EU government leaders in Berlin. This informal exchange aims to discuss the Union’s objectives, including future enlargement, financing and reforms.
The small group meetings take place in different capitals of the European Union. According to the Federal Chancellery, in addition to Chancellor Nehammer, the President of the EU Council Charles Michel and the host, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, will be present in Berlin.
The heads of state and government of Greece, Belgium, Cyprus, Lithuania and Hungary are also participating.
The relationship with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is particularly problematic. Hungary has still not given its consent to the accession of its EU partner Sweden to NATO. Hungary is also skeptical about Ukraine’s prospects of joining the EU, as desired by the European Commission.

“Paradigm change in the field of migration”
According to the chancellery’s announcement, Austria’s main focus is on a “paradigm shift in the field of migration”, “strengthening the EU’s competitiveness in the world” and “a fair approach to enlargement, in which all potential candidates are equal are being treated. “.
Nehammer: “No accelerated procedure”
The Chancellor again emphasized that the EU asylum system (see video above, note) “is broken”. Regarding future enlargements of the EU, Nehammer warned that “there should not be an accelerated procedure for some candidates”. This statement apparently referred to Ukraine, with which the European Commission had recently recommended accession negotiations.
