Expert report ready – mask requirement in supermarket probably as early as June

Date:

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, the government will announce further steps towards the mask requirement – mask requirement, at least in supermarkets and drugstores, is expected to drop in June. The vaccination obligation should remain suspended.

Government decisions on mandatory vaccination and face masks were announced last week. The first concerns the question of whether the vaccination obligation will be suspended this summer or whether the law will be “tightened”. Violations of the obligation should have been punished since mid-March, but on the advice of an expert committee, the vaccination obligation was suspended until June 1.

State Secretary Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) had already stated a few weeks ago that she did not expect “focusing” before the summer. The reason for the suspension was that it would not be proportional given the ommicron variant. The National Vaccination Committee (NIG) still adheres to it: three “shots” are required for the basic vaccination.

Mask should fall in supermarkets – also in public transport?
As for the masks, Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) should announce the end of the obligation to wear them as early as June, at least in the supermarket. Until now – and under the current arrangement until July 8 – it also applies to public transport, train stations, pharmacies, hospitals, homes and governments. It is not yet clear whether it will also be history there next week.

Final report submitted to the federal government
Before deciding on the next steps, the final report of the committee on the monitoring of the vaccination obligation was awaited. That was handed over to the federal government on Monday evening. Both the vaccination obligation and the existing corona measures were “intensively discussed” by the committee.

The call for the abolition of the mask requirement for shop staff has grown louder in recent weeks.

The press conference will take place at 9am – krone.at will of course report live for you.
