Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu today opened the General Assembly of the atlantic arc at the Kursaal in San Sebastian, a meeting that is again in person after the last telematics meeting in June last year.

The Lehendakari stressed the need to “demand a strong Atlantic area that will enable us to meet the challenges we face”, referring to the events that have taken place since the last time an Atlantic Arc General Assembly was held. held in the Basque Country, seven years ago, such as “the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, culminating in December 2020; the covid-19 pandemic yet to be overcome; and the Russian invasion and ensuing war in Ukraine with consequences that are difficult to determine at the moment”.

He recalled that the Basque government “continues to demand a definitive impetus for the completion of the Atlantic Corridor, as it did in 2015. This is a primary objective for all of us, including for the advancement of the European integration project itself”.

The Atlantic Arc Commission territories have, according to the Lehendakari, “played an important role in developing the work of a potential convention on the future of Europe”. A convention that “should, among other things, examine the disappearance of the veto in the Council, open differentiated cooperation and also a new form of association for European countries, which are not members of the Union, wishing to adhere to the values of the European Union”.

The Basque government has updated the “Vision for the Future of Europe” document that it presented in 2017 in the context of the reflection on Europe launched by the then President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker. In which he highlights “the value of sub-state, regional or national governments in a better and richer governance of the European Union”.
