Will in government – Tyrolean SPÖ party conference: Dornauer for re-election

Date:

In the Tyrolean district capital of Schwaz, the regular conference of the opposition state party Tiroler SPÖ started on Saturday morning. It’s all about state party chairman Georg Dornauer. The 39-year-old, who has been in office since 2019, is standing for re-election for the first time. In addition, he will be named a top candidate for the state elections, which will take place in the first quarter of 2023.

About 250 delegates and 50 partygoers gathered in the Schwaz event hotspot “SZentrum”. The election results are expected to be announced in the afternoon. As the highest representative of the federal party, Eva-Maria Holzleitner, member of the national council, federal president of the SPÖ women and deputy president of the federal party, is a guest in Schwaz. Federal party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner apologized: she pays tribute to the Viennese comrades at their state party conference, which is taking place at the same time.

There’s a lot at stake for Dornauer
The Tyrolean State Party Conference is an important starting point for the (pre-)election campaign, which is already getting off the ground. For Dornauer, much is at stake: For a long time anything but undisputed top Tyrolean red, it is probably the 85 percent he had achieved when he was first elected chairman in March 2019.

State list for the elections in Tyrol
Also in the state list for the state elections, all eyes are primarily focused on the mayor of Sellrain. At the beginning of May, the state party board had unanimously nominated him as the frontman for the elections.

Behind Dornauer at the top of the state list, old acquaintances were nominated for the party congress: mayor of Lienz and former party leader Elisabeth Blanik, ÖGB chairman Philip Wohlgemuth (in Innsbruck), state parliamentarians Elisabeth Fleischanderl (Schwaz), Benedikt Lentsch (Landeck) and Claudia Hagsteiner (Kitzbühel) and former MP Christian Kovacevic (Kufstein).

Public work as a goal
Dornauer has taken a largely conciliatory course in recent months, including with the ruling ÖVP. His stated goal is to lead the Tyrolean Reds back into government after ten years of opposition with the People’s Party and the Greens removed from office.

Since the start of the corona pandemic in early 2020, it has undergone a noticeable change in the picture. Gone are the days when he was on his way from so many scandals to blunders and back. The party and club leader recently presented himself as a statesman, enlightened and focused. He placed a special focus on intensive party work to convince critics and skeptics in his own ranks. He now wants to reap the harvest of this work at the party congress.
