After the demonstrations against right-wing extremism in Germany, a similar demonstration will also take place in Vienna. An “uprising against the right-wing danger” is planned for Friday evening under the title “Defend Democracy!”
The demo was initiated by Fridays for Future, Black Voices and the Platform for a Humane Asylum Policy. Support came from, among others, the human rights organization SOS Mitmensch, which loudly and actively advocates the enforcement of human rights. The start is scheduled for 6 p.m. in front of Parliament.
Hundreds of thousands of Germans at demonstrations
This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets against the right in Germany. Some meetings had to be stopped due to overcrowding. For example in Munich, where according to the organizers 250,000 people took part in the demo. This had to be canceled for safety reasons because the event area in the city center was completely overcrowded.
People had already demonstrated in numerous German cities on Friday and Saturday. According to police, 35,000 people took part in Frankfurt am Main on Saturday, and similarly high numbers were reported in Hannover and Dortmund. Thousands were also on the streets in Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Halle, Nuremberg, Kassel, Recklinghausen, Braunschweig, Wuppertal, Erfurt and other cities.
Network campaign: “Weekend of Hope”
On Friday, a demonstration against the right and the AfD in Hamburg was canceled due to the large number of people. The Campact network spoke to a total of around half a million participants on Friday and Saturday. Board member Christoph Bautz said it was a “weekend of hope.”
