The Minister of Rural Development and Environment of the provincial government “regrets” the statements of the Deputy for Environment of Guipuzkoa. “At the Artajona factory we cannot even receive the Insalus water that we could perfectly drink,” he pointed out.
“Any liquid waste that could reach the Atajona plant would be prohibited. That plant cannot even receive the water from Insalus that we could perfectly drink.” These are the words of the Minister of Rural Development and Environment of the Government of Navarre, José Maria Aierdiabout the controversy surrounding the liquid leachate products allegedly shipped from the US Zubieta waste treatment plant to the plant Ecofert by Artajona.
The aforementioned company, as stated this week in the Aierdi Commission, “illegally received liquid leachate” from the Guipuzcoan plant, namely 2,100 tons in 2022 and 3,400 more in 2023, and has therefore not complied with the integrated environmental permit . which led to its preventive closure and the opening of disciplinary proceedings.
These statements have been responded to by the Deputy for Sustainability of Gipuzkoa, José Ignacio Asensio, who considers it “false” that this area has irregularly sent leachate from the Zubieta incinerator to Ecoferf Sansaoin, ensuring that the transferred substances are properly encrypted and authorized. , and accused the Navarrese government of “evading responsibilities”.
Last Thursday, in statements to journalists, Aierdi “seriously” deplored Asensio’s statements and clarified the following: “we have not classified the waste from Gipuzkoa as ecotoxic, we simply stated that the Ecofert plant has an integrated environmental permit for treatment compost, therefore , the waste it can process is waste coming from the organic fraction of the waste, it cannot manage other types of fractions… Therefore, the waste that arrived from Gipuzkoa, in this case a waste liquid, could not be received at the Artajona -factory”.
He has specified that they do not determine what the classification is, the code of that waste, but that they simply say that that plant cannot “receive even the Insalus water that we could perfectly drink.” “Any liquid waste that could reach the Atajona plant would be prohibited,” he stressed.
“It is our responsibility to ensure the control of the environmental permits of the companies in Navarre, especially those dealing with companies that affect the environment, and that is why we have done this and we will continue to do so,” he said.
Counsel noted that in the existing contract both parties talked about sludge, but during the visit he made to the plant in November 2023, it was noted that the document from the carrier who transported the waste talked about liquid leachate, and therefore there is liquid leachate. “a disagreement.” As a result, they contacted both the environmental authorities of the Basque government and those of the Guipuzcoan factory.
On December 18, Gipuzkoa stopped sending waste, despite the fact that there had been a report of “absolute cessation of this type of operation” since November 27, according to the counselor, who indicated that he had not had any recent contact with the deputy of Gipuzkoan. but he is sure he will get it in the coming days.
