The dispute over soil protection comes to a head. After a meeting, the spatial planning officials of the nine states announced the agreement on a ‘soil strategy’. The Greens reacted angrily and called it fake news.
Upper Austrian State Councilor Markus Achleitner, who invited people to the meeting, apparently forgot that a decision on the land strategy was not possible without a conference on spatial planning. “Today’s pseudo decision at Achleitner’s initiative” also lacked the binding target of a maximum of 2.5 hectares of land use per day, said Greens party manager Olga Voglauer. “Since there was no meeting of the ÖROK today, no decisions were made,” Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler added.
The Greens received support from Kurt Weinberger from the hail insurance: with about twelve hectares of consumption per day, Austria is one of the negative leaders in Europe. “Every year we destroy 4,200 hectares of agricultural land. He calculates that this corresponds to an amount of 25.2 million kilograms of bread grain per year and therefore the annual bread requirement of 300,000 Austrians. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) sided with the states and spoke of an “important milestone for the careful use of our soil.”
