“The memorial to the victims of March 3 is finally starting to be born and created”

The spokesperson of the March 3 Association, Nerea Martínez, has expressed her satisfaction because “the memorial to the victims of March 3 is finally beginning to be born and created”, following the approval of the statutes of the March 3 Commemoration Foundation, which constitute the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Alava and the Municipal Council and Diocese of Vitoria.

In an interview on Radio Euskadi on the eve of the 48th anniversary of the police massacre against striking workers in the church of San Francisco de Asís, Martínez thanked the people of Vitoria show their support for the victimsbecause “that force” was the one that initiated the governments and the memorial project.

Regarding the content of the memorial to be built in the church, Martínez has said that it remains to be “defined”, and that the “shared working methodology” with the institutions must first be decided.

In this sense, he has announced that the interlocutor of the association, Julen Díaz de Argote, will meet with the representatives of Gogora during the first half of March, and has emphasized that in other experiences they have known in Chile, Portugal and other countries, at these types of commemorations “no one doubts that the ashes are the victims.”

He said, among other things, that they do inventory of tangible assets of members of the association regarding that March 3, 1976 (later they will expand the inventory survey to the entire city). Likewise, he has emphasized the importance of preserving the marks left by the massacre in the church, such as bullet holes.

Martínez has been blamed Spanish state ‘that continues to violate human rights and international law”, and that this must “put an end to the model of impunity”. For example, he has denounced that judge María Servini, who is leading the so-called ‘Argentine complaint’, “feels completely blocked” because she deny her information, make statement to some people, etc.

This Sunday marks the 48th anniversary of the massacre, and Martínez explained that the commemorative events will start at 11 a.m., with a tribute by EH Bildu at the monolith of the victims in which the March 3 Association will participate. Then there will be the tribute organized by the association at 12 noon, after which the demonstration will start at 12.30 pm.
