“The best of both worlds” is what the black-green federal government wanted to politically unite when it took office. However, in the final spurt and the beginning of the primary campaign, little of this remains. Recently, ministers have even publicly criticized each other. A development that will certainly intensify, according to political analyst Thomas Hofer.
Recently there was an open debate about early elections and even a super election Sunday in June. As is known, the federal government decided against this and decided to introduce a mini-program. Since it became clear that elections would be held in September, even more discussion has arisen.
Disputes are increasing
For months, ÖVP state governors have criticized Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler for his soil protection plans and Green Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler for her drastic and sometimes legally controversial transport projects. Now the dispute no longer only exists between the states and the federal governments, but also within the governments themselves.
As is known, Europe and Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) launched a political all-out attack this weekend and criticized Gewessler and Justice Minister Alma Zadic, who can even expect a parliamentary question from her coalition partner.
“These types of disputes will become even more intense come Election Day,” said political expert Thomas Hofer. Both parties in government would consciously adopt a course of confrontation on issues that directly affect their own electorates. However, Hofer does not expect an escalation. And the mini-program will also probably be processed as planned. Explosive: According to Hofer, the tone between black and green is currently becoming harder because it is unlikely that both parties will form a coalition with each other again after the elections. “Right now, in a possible three-way constellation, the Neos would probably be in the lead,” he says.
