If this is not successful in the first round of voting, a second election will take place in two weeks between the two candidates with the highest number of votes. If there is only one candidate, you can only vote yes or no.
The proportional system determines the number of mandates
In the elections for the municipal council, the results of the election Sunday count. Depending on the strength of a list, the representatives are determined according to the proportional system. The board members of the community board or the municipal council also originate from this system. This means that there will be no government negotiations such as after the state elections, because parties with the highest number of votes automatically receive a co-governance position.
Nine to forty representatives in the communities
The complex distribution using the proportional system is calculated using the d’Hondt method using computers. The size of the municipal councils depends on the number of inhabitants of the municipality. There are local councils in the state ranging from nine to 25 mandates. There are forty in the city.
Preferential votes can help candidates
The mandates are awarded within the parties in descending order of list positions. In addition to the Kreuzerl for the party, a preferential vote can also be awarded to a candidate from the chosen party. If someone receives a third of the party votes as preferential votes, he automatically rises to the top of the list.
Results only after the official close of voting
Only after the polling stations have closed will the votes be counted, as will the voting cards that have already been received. The first results from smaller communities are expected in the early afternoon. The provisional results in the city of Salzburg should be known around 6 p.m. (without voting cards).
