He is leading in all polls, but no party wants to govern with a “People’s Chancellor”: the FPÖ chairman talks to Conny Bischofberger about boot camps for youth gangs, Hungary’s asylum policy, Haider’s biggest mistake and his mother’s concerns about Herbert Kickl’s fans split.
On the penultimate floor of the parliamentary club FPÖ, Kickl’s employees wait for the starting gun for the ‘Krone’ interview on Friday afternoon. If all goes well, we go up the last stairs to the Spartan boss’s office. Herbert Kickl stands in front of his desk, next to him on a sideboard is a photo of Karoline Edtstadler, dressed in the colors of the Russian flag, with Vladimir Putin – probably an allusion to the ÖVP’s Russian connections. Next to the appointment folders and files lies the ‘Dictionary of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy’ – ‘a small excursion into Babler’s world’, as he explains in passing. There are no gold pins to be seen.
