Sometimes a club, sometimes not – the confusion about ÖVP seniors continues

Date:

The confusion about the “two souls” of the retired LH senior citizen association Josef Pühringer continues fortunately, indirectly fueled by the OÖVP’s own party lawyers. Because in an ongoing data protection case they argue that the senior citizens’ association could also use addresses from the electoral register for information activities for non-members (ie external association work) because it is a sub-organization of the ÖVP. The SPÖ demands an end to the confusion and the repayment of 1.9 million corona aid.

It’s definitely worth a try,” is the punch line of a joke that LH aD Joseph Puhringer just told on the Facebook page of his Upper Austrian Senior Citizens Association. The joke is about money – but it would be brutal to transfer the punch line to OÖVP seniors’ current problems with corona aid payments of 1.9 million euros. Even…

Well, it’s all no joke, even if the argument of Pühringer & Co. that the Seniors Association received the support as an association and not as a sub-organization of the ÖVP (otherwise it would be illegal) like it. Especially because the ÖVP itself – through lawyers – intensively emphasized in another case how much the Upper Austrian Seniors Association was a sub-organization of the ÖVP in its information activities as an association.

Unsolicited senior mail to a citizen
This is about a data protection procedure that has been going on for some time. In it, a citizen to whom the Upper Austrian Senior Citizens’ Association had sent unsolicited mail (a training program and a member newspaper) wanted to know why his address was being used. Response of the OÖVP lawyers (on October 15, 2019): It comes from the electoral register, which the Upper Austrian Senior Citizens Association, as a sub-organization of the OÖVP, is allowed to use for this purpose.

SPÖ calls on seniors’ association to order
Why SPÖ state manager Florian Koppler now says sharply: “The ÖVP’s argument collapses like a house of cards. mr. Stelzer (which means OÖVP boss) Thomas Stelzer as head of the OÖVP, note), the confusion is over. Pay back the Corona millions immediately!”

Meanwhile, Josef Pühringer insists on the “two-soul theory” of the association (founded in 1956) and the VP sub-organization (collected by her in 1977). The privacy statement of the Seniors Association was also reformulated accordingly in 2020/21, apparently to distinguish the association more from party politics. See before this (it may take a while to load from the depths of the web) and after.

“The game of excuses must end,” demand the NEOS
The NEOS Upper Austria has a provincial spokesperson Felix Eypeltauer responded to these developments, including as follows: “The ÖVP is becoming increasingly entangled in its own club structures. Nobody believes in the excuse game of the ÖVP and the Seniors Association anymore – the contradictions are also apparent from the current reports. The vzw Seniorenbund must be seen as part of the OÖVP and is used by it as such. OÖVP boss Thomas Stelzer must now take responsibility, end the apology and ensure that the approximately 2 million euros from the NPO fund (the Covid support fund for non-profit organizations, mind you) is immediately repaid. The ÖVP not only harms itself with its behavior, but also plays with the confidence of the Austrians in politics as a whole.”
