Two peacekeepers were killed when an improvised explosive device exploded in the West African crisis state of Mali. Two other blue helmets were injured in the explosion on Friday.
“This is the sixth incident since May 22 in which a UN peace convoy has been hit,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. In Mali, the military staged a coup against the government in 2020 and has been in power ever since.
The army has ended its cooperation with former colonial power France in the fight against Islamists and has instead hired the Russian mercenary group Wagner.
The European Union drastically reduced its military training mission in Mali in April. The Austrian armed forces are involved in the EU mission EUTM and the UN mission MINUSMA with a total of about 90 soldiers. According to the United Nations, the security situation in the country has deteriorated drastically.
