The Lehendakari has expressed his condolences to the family of the man who was “a political and institutional leader of the first order”.
Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has expressed grief over the death of former Lehendakari José Antonio Ardanza, highlighting his “tireless” commitment to peace and coexistence and to economic and industrial recovery.
Urkullu, in a post on Facebook, remembered the man called Lehendakari from 1985 to 1999, saying that he always acted “on behalf of the Basque Nationalist Party”, in addition to developing “intense management activities both in the cooperative and in the company”.
“Lehendakari Ardanza worked tirelessly for peace and coexistence, but also for the economic and industrial recovery of Euskadi,” the current Lehendakari emphasized.

He further said that he has been in ‘permanent’ contact with the Ardanza family in recent weeks and has expressed his condolences to them.
“Lehendakari Ardanza has been a leading political and institutional reference in Euskadi. As a person with solid humanist and democratic values, he always defended his ideology based on respect for human rights, plurality and democratic coexistence,” he added.
