Martin Selmayr, former representative of the European Commission in Austria, has been nominated as the new EU ambassador to the Vatican. He caused a stir last September by describing Austria’s dependence on Russian natural gas as “blood money.”
Since February 1, Selmayr has been a visiting professor of European law at the Institute for Innovation and Digitalization in Law of the University of Vienna for six months. Before that, he headed the European Commission’s representation in Austria for four years. Longtime Deputy Head of Commission Representation Wolfgang Bogensberger is currently acting Head of the EU Mission in Vienna.
92 embassies in Rome
The Holy See in Rome has a total of 92 embassies, including those of the EU. On Tuesday in Brussels, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced his nominees for heads of delegation, office managers and charge d’affaires for the coming change. In total, that is 44 people who still need the green light from their host country to actually be appointed.
The Vatican maintains diplomatic relations with 184 states, as well as with the EU and the Sovereign Order of Malta.
