Tyrolean State Councilor Astrid Mair (ÖVP), responsible for community services and the labor market, wants to tackle the labor shortage, especially in the social sector, with a bold initiative. The politician calls on the federal government to revise the fitness law.
“Unfortunately, the trend is increasing for young boys to be identified as unfit during their exams. This means that they are not only exempt from basic military service, but also from community service. Anyone deemed unfit for their position would be required to complete community service – with only minor restrictions. That is exactly why I see great potential for the future in mandatory community service,” Mair explains in response to a question from Krone.
