Secretary of State for Youth Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) traveled to New York on Sunday to address the UN General Assembly the following day. The content is how as few young people as possible become criminals. In addition, Plakolm has planned several meetings, including with youth officials.
“Thanks to many initiatives, crime among young people in Austria is at a very low level. But we should not see this as an opportunity to rest, we have to make sure it stays that way,” said Secretary of State for Youth Claudia Plakolm before her trip to New York. She therefore wanted to take ideas from the United Nations General Assembly and present Austrian best practice examples at the same time.
‘Sad record of anti-Semitic incidents’
One must be particularly careful in this country when it comes to anti-Semitism. “In 2021 we had a sad record with 965 cases (…). Against this background, we must take initiatives at all levels of Austrian politics and society and act resolutely against them. In Austria we have a special historical responsibility which is particularly we young people should not stop,” said the politician.
She will remain in the US until Wednesday where she will meet her colleagues and youth representatives. Among them are Dominican Republic Youth Minister Rafael Jesus Feliz Gabrcia and UN Special Envoy for Youth Jayathma Wickramanayke.
