Pope Francis condemned the “nightmare” of the war in Ukraine on Pentecost Sunday. The Pope urged world leaders to start peace talks. “Do not lead mankind to destruction,” the Holy Father warned the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The Pope urged “negotiations and concrete talks for a ceasefire”. He commemorated the many people who have had to leave their homes in Ukraine and warned of an “escalation that is becoming increasingly dangerous”. Pope Francis wants to travel to Ukraine, but waits for “the right moment”. He will soon talk to the Ukrainian authorities to see if this is possible, he said on Saturday afternoon. A visit from the Pope is also considered sensitive because of its relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church. Moscow Patriarch Kirill is considered one of the main supporters of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine.
The Pope also welcomed the extension of the ceasefire in civil war-torn Yemen for another two months and expressed hope that the “bloody conflict” that had sparked “one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time” will would soon end. He commemorated the many children who suffer in the conflict in Yemen and are deprived of their future.
